Things to do in and around Harrogate

Many thanks to Mark, G4RCD, who is a Harrogate local, for the following:

There are many ideas for things to do at the town's web site: http://www.visitharrogate.co.uk.

Valley Gardens are close to the town centre, and a great place to walk and relax. Ice creams, teas etc. There might be live music on the Sunday afternoon:

RHS Harlow Carr are lovely gardens on the western edge of Harrogate: https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/harlow-carr. There is also a branch of Betty's tea rooms there, with shorter queues than those that you find outside the Betty's in the town!

The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is on Saturday 8th June. http://www.bedrace.co.uk. The procession of decorated "beds" is great with lots of bands marching etc., then the decorations are removed to reveal a trolley with one seat.

A team of 6 pushers / pullers then run around the town ( some pretty steep hills are involved) pushing the bed with one passenger. They then have to cross through the river Nidd before finishing. The beds are buoyant (hopefully) so the passenger remains on board... all a bit crazy, but great fun to watch.

Most years the FOC dinner is the same day as the bed race, so maybe this year instead of having to do a detour to get to Harrogate because of the closed roads in Knaresborough, why not have a look. It is also a big RAYNET event with local RAYNET members all around the course.

Brimham Rocks is a good place to visit. Unusual rock formations high up above the beautiful Nidderdale valley. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/brimham-rocks.

Fountains Abbey, near Ripon is a ruined Monastery with gardens and water gardens and deer park. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/fountains-abbey-and-studley-royal-water-garden.
