The FOC Northern Get-Together
and Dinner

Cedar Court Hotel
Harrogate
Yorkshire
10th June 2017

Our Venue

The FOC Northern Get-Together and Dinner will once again be at the Cedar Court Hotel, opposite the Stray, in Harrogate. This fine hotel is close to the town centre and the railway station yet it stands in its own extensive grounds and offers ample car parking.

The Cedar Court Hotel

Members' guests are always welcome at this event and we would be delighted to welcome overseas members as well.

Function room

New for 2017, we have arranged a private function room that members are invited to make full use of from 1pm on Saturday afternoon. It is the Willow room, which is on the ground floor. Turn left as you enter the hotel and Willow is almost at the far end, on the right. Please see the Cedar Court floor plan for more details. Members are welcome to take drinks and food from the bar into the Willow room.

Programme

We will have two technical presentations during the afternoon in Willow:

2:30pm: Club Log and LoTW integration for FOC members, by Michael, G7VJR

3:45pm: SDR - what's it all about? by John, G3WGV

We very much hope that members will take full advantage of this new facility. Please let me know what you think!

Things to do in and around Harrogate

Many thanks to Mark, G4RCD, who is a Harrogate local, for the following:

There are many ideas for things to do at the town's web site: http://www.visitharrogate.co.uk.

Valley Gardens are close to the town centre, and a great place to walk and relax. Ice creams, teas etc. There might be live music on the Sunday afternoon:

RHS Harlow Carr are lovely gardens on the western edge of Harrogate: https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/harlow-carr. There is also a branch of Betty's tea rooms there, with shorter queues than those that you find outside the Betty's in the town!

The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is on Saturday 10th June. http://www.bedrace.co.uk. The procession of decorated "beds" is great with lots of bands marching etc., then the decorations are removed to reveal a trolley with one seat.

A team of 6 pushers / pullers then run around the town ( some pretty steep hills are involved) pushing the bed with one passenger. They then have to cross through the river Nidd before finishing. The beds are buoyant (hopefully) so the passenger remains on board... all a bit crazy, but great fun to watch.

Most years the FOC dinner is the same day as the bed race, so maybe this year instead of having to do a detour to get to Harrogate because of the closed roads in Knaresborough, why not have a look. It is also a big RAYNET event with local RAYNET members all around the course.

Brimham Rocks is a good place to visit. Unusual rock formations high up above the beautiful Nidderdale valley. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/brimham-rocks.

Fountains Abbey, near Ripon is a ruined Monastery with gardens and water gardens and deer park. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/fountains-abbey-and-studley-royal-water-garden.

Evening dinner

Our dinner is at 7pm in the comfortable surroundings of the Queen's Suite. The room is available after the dinner until midnight for members to relax and rag chew.

The Menu

After the 2013 dinner we surveyed all members who had attended the dinner in the previous two years and who were available via e-mail. As a result we made some significant changes to the menu in 2014. The new up-market menu was very well received and is now a permanent feature of the event.

For 2017 the chef has created another special menu for us.

Vegetarian courses are also available. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.

Members are asked to advise their choice of menu items when booking. I will keep a note of who has selected what... just in case you do what I often do and forget what you ordered!

Booking

Please book your dinner directly with G3WGV. Full details are contained in News-Sheet 809 (March 2017) and will not be repeated here for security reasons. Hotel room bookings should be made directly with the hotel and again full details on how to do this are in News-Sheet 809.

More information

A more detailed article, chronicling the history of the Northern Get-together and offering more information on the event, the hotel and the town of Harrogate appeared in the Spring 2014 edition of Focus (97).

If you have any other questions then please do ask. I look forward to welcoming you to Harrogate!

73,

John, G3WGV
